Athletes Who Chose Lasik

In the last 10 years LASIK corrective eye surgery has become very widespread. We have now seen super star athletes use LASIK. These stars depend on their eyes to make a living.

People are afraid of the consequences of this type of procedure going bad. As with any surgical procedure, the risks are there. Still many athletes have now had LASIK surgery preformed on their eyes. Let’s see how it went.

The biggest name that comes to mind is Tiger Woods. Can’t think of anyone bigger. He had LASIK done in 1999 to shed his contacts and improve his vision. He now sees at an impressive 20-15 without his contacts.

For a batter in baseball, the quality of his vision is undeniably critical. Without very good vision it is virtually impossible to hit a baseball at big league standards. Some baseball players have used LASIK, risking their careers if vision was degraded.

Even pitching needs good vision. Greg Maddox had LASIK surgery and turned around a 1-3 start into a 9 out of 10 game winning streak. His vision is 20-15 these days.

Greg feels the win streak and the surgery were pure coincidence. He never felt it would improve his pitching. He wanted to get rid of his glasses, and see better for his off field life.

Many hitters have now had LASIK done. All-star players Jeff Bagwell and Bernie Williams are two that have had the surgery. It’s hard to see statistically how it has affected them because they are late in their careers with outstanding stats.

It’s when you here these players talk about life after LASIK surgery that you get an idea of how it is for them. Maddox talks about how nice it is to just sit and watch TV now. Bernie Williams feels it is simply a miracle.

Tiger Woods opted for the surgery mainly to not have to wear contacts. He can have trouble playing in contacts whenever his allergies would flare up. LASIK has solved this problem for him.

The other benefit Tiger has observed is everything seems bigger to him now. He feels this especially has helped him read long putts. The sloped are more defined and clear to him.

With so many athletes trusting there livelihoods to this surgery, us normal people can have confidence that it’s safe. These guys are risking millions of dollars if things go bad. This operation has improved the quality of life for many. Many people.
